LnkStart and Tailscale

Tailscale builds a private network between your machines. LnkStart publishes one of your services on your domain, for people who install nothing. They do not solve the same problem.

What it does better: Tailscale
  • It is a full private network between your machines, which LnkStart neither does nor tries to.
  • It connects peer to peer without you keeping a VPS: it works the route out on its own.
  • TCP, UDP and access to the whole machine out of the box, with identity-based access control.
  • Clients for practically every system, phones included.
Where we differ
  • The visitor installs nothing: they open an address on your domain in their browser, with its padlock.
  • Automatic HTTPS, one certificate per service, renewed on its own.
  • With the service down it answers with your notice page or your fallback address, never a raw error.
  • The address is on your domain and the traffic never crosses third-party servers.

If you want to reach your own machines, Tailscale. If you want someone else to open an address of yours without installing anything, this. And they live together fine: plenty of people run both.
