License and data

Free with signup. What is sent and what happens if it expires.

Signup

When you install the server it registers the email you give and gets a signed free license, saved on the VPS itself. You receive an email to confirm the address. If it cannot register during the install, the server works fully for 30 days; after that, what is published keeps working, but no new machines or services come in until it is registered.

On the VPS

sudo lnkstart server license status
sudo lnkstart server register --email tu@correo.com
sudo lnkstart server license activate LNKD1.xxxxx

The last two are for manual registration or to save a license you already have.

What is sent

On the VPS

sudo lnkstart server telemetry

Prints exactly what leaves your server every day and when renewing the license.

On top of that, when the install finishes a notice goes out with the step it reached and how it ended: that is how we learn where people who cannot install get stuck. No IPs, service names, domains, or anything that goes through the tunnel. The full list, field by field, is on the Telemetry page.

On the VPS

curl -fsSL https://lnkstart.com/install.sh | sudo sh -s -- server tunnels.midominio.com tu@correo.com --no-telemetry

Installs without the notice or the daily report (it writes telemetry = "off"). The license still renews by itself, with only what is required.

On the VPS

sudo lnkstart server license status

/etc/lnkstart/server.toml

[license]
auto_renew = false

With auto_renew = false nothing is ever sent, not even the renewal, and it does not look for forced fixes. Traffic keeps working the same; what is lost is renewal and, with it, updates.

If it expires

An expired license does not cut traffic or shut anything down: it warns in the log and stops updates until renewed, except a forced fix for a serious bug (below).

Updates

LnkStart does not update itself: you update it when you want. The only exception is a version that fixes a serious bug and that we publish as forced: the server installs it by itself (it looks once a day, sending nothing), also with an expired license, says so in the console and tells its machines they need it.

On the VPS

sudo lnkstart update --check
sudo lnkstart update

To not get even forced fixes: sudo lnkstart server forced-fixes off. With auto_renew = false it does not look either. A server installed before this does not get them until sudo lnkstart server forced-fixes on.
